How CGI Products Fail - and How We Fix Them
- CGI Sentinel Series - seal separation at the header flashing. On Naples homes with barrel-tile roofs, we see the flashing above CGI fixed windows pull loose after a few seasons of thermal expansion. The tile holds heat, the aluminum frame expands and contracts, and the sealant bond fails at the top edge. Water gets behind the frame, shows up as a stain inside. We remove the old flashing, reset the frame joint with a polyurethane sealant rated for coastal salt exposure, and re-secure the cap. This is a repair, not a replacement, and it holds for years when done correctly.
- CGI Estate Collection - lower-track corrosion on sliding glass doors under roof overhangs. Weathered Naples roofs with flat or low-pitch overhangs let wind-driven rain hit the door track from the side. The Estate Collection track is sturdy, but the weep holes clog with salt and sand, and water backs up into the sill. We see this most in Park Shore and the Moorings. The fix is cleaning the weep system, replacing the damaged rollers, and re-leveling the track so drainage works again. If the track itself is corroded through, we replace the sill plate with the same gauge aluminum CGI uses.
- CGI 9500 Series - impact glass stress cracks at the corner gaskets. This one surprises people. A stress crack in a 9500 window usually has nothing to do with impact. It’s the roof. When a Naples roof is re-decked without proper expansion clearance at the wall line, the new decking presses against the window header. Over a hot summer, that pressure plus the frame’s own expansion cracks the glass from the corner inward. We’ve fixed this by adjusting the roof-to-wall clearance, then replacing the glass with a CGI-spec laminated unit. If the clearance isn’t corrected, the new glass cracks too.
- CGI Targa Series - roof-to-wall step flashing that was never integrated. Some original builds in North Naples used generic step flashing with Targa windows installed at roof-wall intersections. The flashing works until the roof gets re-tiled or re-shingled, then a different crew bends it wrong and the water path changes. The symptom is a leak that only appears in heavy rain with a south wind. We pull the bottom courses, install proper step flashing that overlaps the window’s nailing flange, and re-lay the tile or shingle. The difference between this and a patch job is about six extra feet of flashing and an hour of time - but it’s the difference between a leak that’s gone and one that comes back in September.
- CGI Estate Sliding Glass Door - roof gutter overflow cascading onto the header. In Aqualane Shores and Old Naples, a lot of homes have gutters that were sized for a different roof profile. When a tile roof gets replaced with a heavier profile, the gutter can’t handle the volume in a downpour, and water cascades over the edge directly onto the door header below. The door isn’t failing - the roof drainage is. We repair the gutter with a larger drop outlet or add a diverter, then reseal the header. This is exactly the kind of job where you need someone who looks at the roof and the door together, not a door company that blames the roof and a roofer who blames the door.
